Interview with the President of TechnoNIKOL Corporation to an expert magazine (interesting!). Kolesnikov, Sergey Anatolyevich President of TechnoNIKOL Corporation Sergey Kolesnikov

The Technonikol Corporation makes money from the production of roofing, thermal insulation and other materials that are needed to ensure that nothing leaks in the house and does not blow anywhere. But the head of the corporation, Sergei Kolesnikov, is looking for something completely different: he will gladly exchange a Mediterranean villa for a tent in the Ural forest, and would prefer a sailing boat competition in the Baltic Sea, where he definitely won’t get away dry, to a yacht trip. By the way, the day before the interview, the businessman returned to Moscow just after such a regatta. During the shooting, the photographer had to run after him along the roller ski track - Kolesnikov is seriously interested in biathlon and even built two biathlon stadiums: in Ryazan and his native Ulyanovsk. The businessman told Forbes Life where he goes in search of adrenaline and why he dreams of birch trees in the Seychelles.

About sailing

On the fourteenth of June I returned from Tallinn, where the Estonian Open Championship in the ORC class was held. 13 crews took part, and our boat “TechnoNIKOL” won the results of two competitions. So this season we had a good start, considering that two European champions competed with us in Tallinn. This summer we are planning three more starts: the Italian Championship, the World Championship in the ORC class (it will also be held in Italy) and in August - the royal Copa Del Rey regatta in Spain.

The Technonikol team has professional athletes who race for money, the rest are advanced amateurs who have been involved in sailing for many years, so our crew is experienced. In general, it costs $50,000 a year to maintain the boat, taking into account the sportsmen’s fees.

In the team, I work on the forecastle as the second number, but sometimes as the main forecastle (the forecastle sailor works with the jib - the front sail - and the spinnaker - an additional sail. - Forbes Life). On a boat, everything obeys the captain's word. Moreover, almost always it is really one word: for example, he says: “Turn!” - and the crew acts silently.

“I command so much in everyday life that there is no discomfort for me when someone who is more experienced and professional than me is in charge of the boat.”

Once I met Vladimir Nikitin, the owner of the Mirame yacht. This is an antique wooden boat, built in Helsinki in 1910 and a member of the Imperial Yacht Club. We often sailed on it across the Baltic, and in 2008, after such cruises, the idea of participating in competitions arose. We rented a boat in France and signed up for several starts. Everyone, of course, lost. At worst they came last, at best - second or third from last. Then we met Estonian athletes, and together we began to perform much better. In August 2010, we already won the world championship in the X41 class - this was our first big victory. Now our task is to repeat the success in the ORC class.

We win - we rejoice. The emotions were enough for one night, and on Monday they forgot about everything. If today you take a high place, then tomorrow you are already an ordinary athlete. We play and don’t get upset. This is a sport, anything can happen.

About hiking and rafting

We live in a concrete jungle - an office, a factory, airports, and everywhere there are a huge number of people. That's why sometimes I want to escape into nature. Since 1994, I have been trying to go rafting with my family every year. I have walked a lot of routes: I started in the Southern Urals, and rafted down the Belaya three times. It is especially good in May. It happens that you are floating along the river, and above you is an arch made of bird cherry. On sunny days it begins to bloom, rays break through it, you inhale the aroma of bird cherry - and then a feeling of paradise arises.

One day in January, I decided to go through the Seychelles on a rented boat. It was hard. There was no air conditioning on the sailboat; due to the heat, it was possible to sleep only from one in the morning to five in the morning. And at night I dreamed of birch trees and the Ural Mountains. So it’s much more pleasant to travel around Russia. What attracts me most is mountains. When I fly to Khabarovsk, for example, I can spend hours looking at the mountain ranges below.

We walked around Altai, rafted along the Katun - this is a cult river for those who go rafting. We went east, to Tyva. We reached Sakhalin and Kamchatka. Of course, rafting there does not give such adrenaline as in Altai or the Sayans, but it is also safer, so you can take children with you. There are crazy beautiful mountains and amazing nature. And very pleasant fishing - it's hard not to catch anything. My daughter enjoyed catching char and mykiss. There wasn't a day when we didn't see a bear in Kamchatka. Sometimes they come right out to the camp, and once I encountered a bear six meters away. He looked at me with curiosity, and I at him. They looked at each other like that and slowly parted ways. In general, Kamchatka is worth visiting.

All family members and, most importantly, my wife share my hobbies. Three months before the wedding, I took her with me to the river in the Southern Urals for the first time - this was about 19 years ago, and since then she has almost never refused such trips. She often suggests some routes herself. We also take the children with us. They put up tents themselves, dismantle their backpacks, and even my twelve-year-old daughter Masha is in no way behind the adults on hikes.

At school, my class and I went camping every summer. We had the same practice during our student years. Then they somehow calmed down - everyone has families, children, work. But when I visit my native Ulyanovsk, I often ask everyone to get together, and the class responds with pleasure. Often we get together for no reason, just to have dinner together, and at one of these meetings someone suggested resuming our trips. Many people supported - half the class gathered. And last year we walked 30 km over the weekend in the west of the Ulyanovsk region. Some were even with children, who, however, were already twenty years old.

About biathlon

I have an Izhevsk BI74 rifle - it is quite easy to use. I am gradually improving my shooting performance. I'm working on my rate of fire and accuracy. Accuracy increases, but slowly: 70% of hits while lying down, 60% while standing. Sometimes I train three times a week - at our stadiums in Ryazan or Ulyanovsk, and sometimes once a month. The rifle is always kept in the gun safe; you can shoot it dry on the tracker.

Of course, in preparation for the skiing and biathlon season, I train hard, but I wouldn’t call it a training camp - I don’t have the opportunity to devote 2-3 weeks to it, like professional athletes. They have training after training - there is no free time. Sometimes I train twice a day and already on the third day I can’t look at my skis - it’s just disgusting. I barely force myself.

There was a very consumerist attitude towards Mikhail Prokhorov when he headed the Russian Biathlon Union. They didn’t even say thank you to him, they even scolded him after the Olympiad. The most useful thing that the president of the union (Alexander Kravtsov. - Forbes Life) can do today is to increase funding, first of all, for children's sports. It is important to increase the number of children’s sports schools and not ruin children, not try to get them out of the maximum until they are 16 years old. In the Soviet system, at the age of 14, we were very heavily loaded, we were such consumables, we worked for wear and tear - my heart even couldn’t stand it at one point. It seems to me that before the age of 16 you need to develop strength and technique, and then increase functional loads. When a person grows, it’s already hard for him - all the systems of the body change. Let more children study - even if they don’t become champions, they will be healthy people.

“The biathlon stadium that we built in Ulyanovsk with a 2.5 km circle and standing stands cost about 70 million rubles. In Ryazan - comparable money. If such stadiums are built with public money, it will cost 300–500 million.”

In the summer I go rollerblading. For example, at Planernaya we made a very difficult circle. Up and down, up and down - a drop of 148 m on a circle of 2.5 km. This is quite a lot even for men. Level space is only at the stadium. It's very exhausting.

The most difficult track I have run on is in Kontiolahti, Finland, where the Biathlon World Cup stages are held. For veteran competitions, the route is slightly changed: instead of the famous steep “wall”, you have to overcome a more gradual but long climb. But even after it, most athletes of our age get very tired. Even those who previously performed at a very high level. This year I also participated in the Veterans World Championship there. Our team won the relay race.

I already understand that I won’t be an Olympic champion, so I don’t have a constant goal of winning. The main thing is to run well for yourself, show a decent time, or simply not lose too much to someone who is objectively stronger.

About family

Now the children are going through an interesting period: the eldest son is a student, the middle son is being sent to England for the summer to study the language, the daughters are actively involved in sports dancing, and when I go to their training, I look at what they do with great respect. So even in their schedule, finding free time to travel together is not easy. Although the older children are already becoming independent and it is difficult to go out with them, the younger ones are happy to join us. But everyone went to Kamchatka except the youngest daughter, because she is not yet seven years old. The children were delighted.

Afterword

The main sport in my life now is sleep. Recovery. I try to sleep 7–8 hours, but I don’t always succeed. If I don't get enough sleep during the work week, I get enough sleep on the weekends. In any sport there are two parts: load and recovery. And this is not only sleep, but also proper nutrition. Eat meat during the day, not in the evening. Don't overeat. Be sure to have a massage, a bath once a week, etc.

Sergei Kolesnikov, who comes from a simple Soviet family, realized while still a student that the only way to get ahead in the world was to own his own business. At the age of 18, he and a friend began covering roofs to order, and at 20, he registered the Technonikol company for the production of roofing materials. The business development scheme was simple: purchase of an old plant, its modernization, production of products. Over the course of 10 years, the corporation, which began with the production of membranes for roofs, has grown into a large-scale international company, which in 2005 took 1st place in the production of building materials in Europe. In 2017, its founder Sergei Kolesnikov was ranked 114th among the richest businessmen in Russia by Forbes with a fortune of $900 million. This did not prevent him from also succeeding in social activities, charity and sports.

  • FULL NAME:
  • Date of Birth: February 25, 1972
  • Education: Moscow Institute of Physics and Mathematics (1995)
  • Date of start of business/age: 1992, 20 years

  • Current Status (2017, Forbes):$900 million

When in the early 90s, two MTFI students Sergei Kolesnikov and Igor Rybakov began taking private orders for installation and repair of roofing, no one could imagine that an innocent desire to earn pocket money would grow into a large corporation that would work in the territory of 7 countries of the world and export products to another 82 countries.

Sergey Anatolyevich Kolesnikov- Russian entrepreneur and founder of an international business based on the TechnoNIKOL company, who for several years has been included in the list of the 200 richest businessmen in Russia. He is a member of the Presidium of the General Council and the head of the Antimonopoly Committee of the Public Organization "Business Russia", and also serves as a public ombudsman for antimonopoly legislation. In 2017, his fortune, according to Forbes, reached $900 million.

The millionaire's success story begins in the harsh 90s. When many chose to go with the flow and could not adapt to new market conditions, Sergei Kolesnikov and his partner decided to create their own business from scratch.

“A crisis is an ideal time to build bridges. Only in a crisis can you get the best quality at the lowest price in a short time and at the right time. From the point of view of project organization and actual work, it’s simply impossible to think of a better time than a crisis.”

In 1992, he began with the manufacture and repair of roofs for private orders, and in 2016 he owned 50% of a colossal business based on the functioning of 51 manufacturing enterprises. The development process of the TechnoNIKOL company is a gradual expansion of the range of regions of presence.

  • 1994 - first plant in Vyborg;
  • 1997-1999 - factories in Ukraine and Belarus;
  • 2001-2003 - enterprises in Lithuania;
  • 2005-2016 - divisions in Italy, Germany, Scotland, Czech Republic, Poland.

For his contribution to the development of a business with a wide geography of activity, the millionaire was awarded the international award “Entrepreneur of the Year - 2013”.

The short biography of the brilliant businessman Sergei Kolesnikov also includes active social activities. Now he heads the Committee on Antimonopoly Legislation of the public organization “Business Russia”, and is also a member of the Social and Business Council under the FAS Russia.

Reference! For active public work to improve Russian antimonopoly legislation in 2015, the businessman received gratitude from the President of the Russian Federation V. Putin.

He is interested in biathlon, participates in sailing regattas, and carries out philanthropic activities in support of Russian sports, for which in 2015 he was awarded the “Patron and Philanthropist of the Year” memorial badge.

The entrepreneur himself considers his significant successes in business, social activities, and sports to be the result of many years of hard work. The secrets of Sergei Kolesnikov's success in his interview

How the TechnoNIKOL corporation was born

On February 25, 1972, a son, Sergei, was born into a family of Ulyanovsk workers. After graduating from high school, like dozens of other boys, he entered the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Physics at MIPT.

In the university dormitory he met his future business partner, Igor Rybakov. During the first summer holidays, friends decided to earn extra money and placed an advertisement in the newspaper about roof installation and repair.

“We needed a job for 3-4 months to earn money for the coming school year. Apart from manufacturing and repairing roofs, we couldn’t do anything that was required at that time in Russia.”

This is how the first roof appeared, and a year later the second. In 1992, through friends, the young roofers managed to receive their first large order - repairing the roof of a shoe factory in the city of Kimry. Then friends understand the need to register a company. This is how the small company TechnoNIKOL appeared.

Reference! In 1993, Sergei Kolesnikov and his partner needed a large batch of membrane coatings to repair a roof. They placed an order, but only the Uchalinsky plant in Bashkiria agreed to fulfill it, which was engaged mainly out of despair: more than half of the enterprise’s production capacity was idle. Roofing students became interested in roofing felt equipment and soon realized that it could be converted to produce membranes. Then the partners had the idea of buying out and modernizing one of their Soviet factories.

For the next 2 years, the partners worked actively and saved money, and in 1994 they acquired the first plant for the production of roofing and waterproofing materials in Vyborg. It became the starting point for the geographical expansion of the TechnoNIKOL enterprise in Russia.

Becoming a giant enterprise

The business of the small enterprise took off: despite the crisis, people needed roofs, and newly minted entrepreneurs realized the need to expand.

In 1997, the first TechnoNIKOL branch opened in Belarus, and in 1999, a plant began operating in Ukraine.

In Europe there is such an important detail as reputational responsibility

The investment climate in Russia causes concern among many economists. It is not very favorable, I must say. Foreign investment in the country is coming quite timidly. Our own investments are also not enough. Domestic entrepreneurs often prefer to invest in other countries where the climate is better. After the crisis, competition for attracting investment has intensified in the world.

After all, only through them can things be improved and, by updating and modernizing the economy, develop further. It is also important for Russia to remove existing obstacles to investment and accelerate its development. The obstacles were discussed during the discussion of the topic “Investment Map of Russia” within the framework of the Russian Investment and Construction Forum, Stroitelnaya Gazeta reports.
The discussion was started by Sergey Kolesnikov from the TechnoNIKOL company.

On November 21, the award ceremony for the winners of the national stage of the international competition “Entrepreneur of the Year 2018” in Russia, organized by EY, took place in Moscow.

Title “Entrepreneur of the Year 2018” went to Igor Rybakov, co-founder, managing partner of TECHNONICOL Corporation and Sergei Kolesnikov, co-founder, managing partner of TECHNONICOL Corporation, who also won in the Industry category. In June 2019, they will go to the international finals of the competition in Monte Carlo (Monaco), where they will represent Russia in competition with the strongest representatives of the business community from many countries of the world.

The international competition “Entrepreneur of the Year” has been held in Russia since 2003. The geography of the competition today covers 50 countries. The EY Entrepreneur Of the Year Awards® is the only entrepreneurship competition in the world.

Igor Rybakov, co-founder and managing partner of TECHNONICOL Corporation, says: “When we heard our names, first in the Industry category, which was very pleasant, and then also as the main winners, it was an incredible shock, awe, my heart jumped out of my chest. After all, so many worthy applicants took part in the competition. Let me tell you a secret: the TECHNONICOL phenomenon is a categorically complementary partnership. My partner at TECHNONICOL is Sergei Kolesnikov, my family partner is my Katya. I am grateful to everyone who has surrounded me all these years, to all the employees and associates of the TECHNONICOL corporation (let me remind you: with the best labor productivity in the industry in the world): people of fantastic strength and energy!

I am very grateful to the organizers of EY: Alexander Ivlev and the entire EY team, which makes this wonderful holiday - a holiday of spirit, a holiday of love, a holiday of love of creation, a holiday of creating the country we deserve!

The public recognition we have received is a very powerful force that allows us to go on our next journey and do even more important things! My goal: to make 10,000 successful entrepreneurs like me!”

Sergey Kolesnikov, co-founder and managing partner of TECHNONICOL Corporation, notes: “It’s very nice to win such a prestigious competition, I feel euphoria, like from my sporting success! Many thanks to EY, who have been supporting this idea for 16 years, organizing the competition at a very high level with a very authoritative jury. Many thanks to the jury for choosing us!

It’s a pity that only the owners, and not the entire team of our team, can receive an award in the “Entrepreneur of the Year” competition. After all, the success of TECHNONICOL is, first of all, the merit of all employees who are constantly working to increase labor productivity and offer new ideas aimed at improving production processes. I want to say a big thank you to every employee of the Production Division that I have the honor of leading. We have the next stage ahead – the international final of the competition in June in Monte Carlo. The organizers and previous winners have already wished us victory, we will try, cheer for us!”

Alexander Ivlev, managing partner of EY for the CIS countries, head of the international program “Entrepreneur of the Year” in Russia, says: “This year, 69 entrepreneurs from 67 companies from 10 regions of Russia took part in the competition. Together, they provide jobs for more than 39,000 Russian citizens, and their total income exceeds 500 billion rubles. Sergey Kolesnikov and Igor Rybakov are prominent representatives of Russian entrepreneurship who managed to transform the TECHNONICOL corporation into a leading manufacturer of modern roofing, waterproofing and thermal insulation materials for Russian consumers. In addition, Igor Rybakov pays great attention to philanthropy and support of socially significant projects - this factor is emphasized by the jury of the international finals of the Entrepreneur of the Year competition. I am confident that Igor and Sergey will represent Russia at the highest level in the competition with the best entrepreneurs in the world in Monaco in the summer of 2019.”

Today Forbes published a list of the 200 richest businessmen in Russia. The list also included businessmen associated with Ulyanovsk. Co-owner of the TechnoNikol corporation Sergei Kolesnikov immediately rose 60 positions and took 114th place in the ranking. Volga-Dnepr President Alexey Isaikin also increased his fortune, ending up in 160th place on the list.

Kolesnikov - ready to take off

A native of Ulyanovsk, Sergei Kolesnikov, founder, co-owner and president of the TechnoNikol corporation, took 114th place in the ranking of the 200 richest businessmen in the country in 2017. According to Forbes, Kolesnikov’s fortune doubled over the year – from $450 million to $900 million. Over the course of a year, Kolesnikov rose 60 positions on the list. In 2016, the Ulyanovsk businessman took 174th place in the Forbes ranking, and in 2015 – 175th place.

The success story of Sergei Kolesnikov is impressive. Born in Ulyanovsk in 1972, he studied at school No. 63. In 1992, Kolesnikov, together with Igor Rybakov, a fellow student at MIPT, founded a roof repair company. After 3 years, the partners bought a controlling stake in the Vyborg Ruberoid Plant. Today, the TechnoNikol corporation owns 51 enterprises in seven countries around the world, producing roofing and insulating materials. Export is established in 82 countries. The corporation's consolidated revenue in 2016, according to Forbes, amounted to 70 billion rubles.

At the same time, Kolesnikov invests money in the development of sports - he finances biathlon schools in his native Ulyanovsk and Ryazan. In 2012, in Ulyanovsk, he built a biathlon stadium for 70 million rubles. Kolesnikov himself participates in amateur biathlon competitions. He is married and has four children.

Isaikin is back to square one

Another permanent resident of the Forbes list is the president of the Ulyanovsk Volga-Dnepr company Andrey Isaikin. The businessman improved his position compared to last year, taking 160th place. Now his fortune is estimated at $600 million. In the Forbes 2016 list, he took 185th place with $400 million, in 2015 – 163rd place with $600 million.

Alexey Isaikin was born in 1952. In 1977 he graduated from the Irkutsk Institute of National Economy, majoring in industrial economist. He served in the Air Force, worked in a customer representative office at the Ulyanovsk Aviation Industrial Complex - the current Aviastar. In 1990, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, he completed his military career and headed JSC Volga-Dnepr. The company began operating the An-124-100 Ruslan aircraft. Since 2002, he has been president of the Volga-Dnepr group of companies.

Galchev's problems

There is another person on the Forbes list related to Ulyanovsk. President of Eurocement Group Filaret Galchev, owner of the Sengileevsky and Novoulyanovsky cement plants, took 68th place in the ranking of the richest businessmen. Galchev's fortune is estimated at $1.3 billion.

The Greek citizen owns a 100% stake in Eurocement Group, the largest cement producer in Russia with a production capacity of 53 million tons. However, the company has not been doing very well in recent years. According to Forbes, 100 billion rubles is the net debt of Eurocement Group as of March 2016. It is worth noting that over several years Galchev has fallen significantly in the ranking of the “richest” - for example, in 2013 his fortune was estimated at $6.7 billion.
