Business of the Future. The most promising industries and companies for the next quarter century.

To put something green in your wallet, you first need to buy something green on the market ... It's no secret that companies working in the field of alternative energy sources, coupled with environmental protection, are especially attractive. There is a whole gamut of industries in which such companies operate. You will be surprised at the breadth of this spectrum. The answer to the question of what to buy specifically.

10 criteria for an investment approach.

Wind and its energy
The so-called wind farms are being built around the world. European and North American businesses are actively investing in this industry, as one of the most promising. This topic includes not only the production of energy from wind power, but also the development and construction of wind turbines. If you find this industry promising, look for companies that sell wind-generated energy or companies that produce equipment for this business. Recently, there have been a sufficient number of such companies, but General Electric (NYSE: GE) has the likelihood that the company's business stability will not change over time.

Water and its energy
Perhaps the most important natural resource the planet possesses. In recent years, there has been a realization that humanity can run out of natural fresh water. Moreover, many regions of the world have already encountered this problem. This gave investors a clear understanding of the investment attractiveness of companies that produce (if I may say so), purify and sell water. The largest water service company in the United States is Aqua America (NYSE: WTR), which supplies drinking water to more than three million people. The next company in the industry is ITT Industries (NYSE: ITT), which is a manufacturer of water treatment systems. To see the power of the other side of this business on a larger scale, take a look at the Three Gorges Dam project implemented in China on the Yangtze River, in which more than $ 25 billion is invested, and which should become the largest hydropower plant in the world. Hydroelectricity involves various technologies and infrastructural capabilities in the process, both for the real sector and for investors. One of the promising companies are: the largest operators of the hydroelectric sector PG&E Corp. (NYSE: PCG), and Idacorp (NYSE: IDA).

Solar power
The rise in price of world energy resources gives this industry good prospects. If you believe in this industry, buy shares of companies producing solar panels. Industry Outstanding: First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR), Evergreen Solar (Nasdaq: ESLR).

Fuel cells or batteries
Already almost universally conducted research on the theme of nutrients for cars. The US government hopes that a hydrogen-fueled car will be commonplace by 2020. If this is truly the technology of the future, there are millions of cars and millions of consumers who expect it. If you believe in such a development of events, buy shares of companies working in the field of development of batteries for automobiles. Highlights: Ballard Power Systems (Nasdaq: BLDP) - a manufacturer of elements that can be used from cars to power plants, and Fuel Cell Energy (Nasdaq: FCEL).

Efficiency
Almost every aspect of business efficiency is a business that respects the environment. It can be devices with lower energy consumption, cars with lower fuel consumption, paperless paperwork, saving hundreds of tons of paper, and, consequently, forest resources. From an investment point of view, this area is more time consuming to invest. Since there are no companies directly involved in business efficiency as such. However, there are companies that have done a great job to enhance the efficiency of the existing business. For example, General Electric (NYSE: GE) with its Ecomagination subsidiary.

Pollution control
From reducing emissions from industrial production to reducing emissions from your car. If this is what you are concerned about, look for companies that develop anti-pollution technologies such as Fuel-Tech (Nasdaq: FTEK) and Versar (AMEX: VSR)

Waste Management
Circular waste management has become standard practice in recent years. Materials that were previously thrown away are now turned back into goods and useful things. If you believe that the residual products of human life will be processed and in the future, your portfolio should include Waste Management shares (NYSE: WMI).

Organic products
Organic farms shy away from the use of pesticides, engage in sustainable farming practices and sell environmentally friendly products that are by far the most beneficial than long-running, well-publicized products. Industry companies are involved in animal husbandry management practices that avoid the use of hormones and antibiotics. It is a healthy food - and a good business. Keep in your portfolio: Whole Foods Markets (Nasdaq: WFMI), United Natural Foods (Nasdaq: UNFI) and NBTY (NYSE: NTY)

It was, is and will be the most reliable and stable industry in terms of work. And I hope that he will remain so not only in the next three years, but also much longer. The main budget-forming “cow” for the whole country is still on its feet, despite price collapses, technological hunger and cost changes. Hundreds of thousands of people are employed in the oil and gas sector, and the list of professions may take more than one page.

True, the working and living conditions are characterized by severity and many restrictions, but this does not in the least cool people's desire to “get into the oil industry”. To many, work here seems to be a kind of lifelong guarantee of well-being. This is true in many respects, but much is changing in the oil “Eden”, especially in subsidiaries and service companies: premiums, bonuses, various privileges, training programs and large-scale corporate events are being reduced. However, in the public mind, work in the oil and gas sector is still considered the equivalent of stability, and is marked with the emoticon “Life is good!”

Information Technology

People employed in the field of high technologies differ in their warehouse from workers in other industries and perceive the surrounding reality in a slightly different way. These are citizens of the world: a typical IT specialist can work for a Canadian or New Zealand company without leaving his cozy apartment in Chelyabinsk or Tambov. And at the same time feel confident and independent. For it is quite natural to look for a job around the world, work on several projects at once and calculate your salary in dollars or euros.

And companies working in the field of IT form international project teams based on the specifics of the tasks and paying attention to the qualifications, experience, and speed of the specialist. It does not matter for them where the employee is physically located: in Russia, China or India. Fortunately, “Russian brains” are still highly valued in the global high-tech market, and well paid. Therefore, our smart and talented programmers can be quite confident in their relevance and good market value not only for the next three years, but also much longer.

Commercial medicine

The harsher and ruthless the state is reforming state medicine, the more opportunities open to commercial medicine. After all, the sick and people in need of help did not decrease. On the contrary, the population of our country is aging, which means that medical services will be more and more in demand. Of course, commercial medicine will develop, first of all, in large cities, since it is there that the main solvent population is concentrated. Over the past two years, the number of multifunctional medical centers and network paid laboratories has noticeably increased in cities.

And not only doctors and nursing staff will be in demand in this area. Commercial medicine requires administrators, managers for working with clients and insurance companies, marketers, advertisers, middle and senior managers. Based on the fact that the number of services in free medicine is steadily decreasing, and the needs of people are growing, we can say that the field of commercial medicine has very great potential for development over the next three to five years.

Agriculture

The state course on import substitution and budget subsidies give a chance to grow and develop some areas of agriculture. In the last three to five years, crop production, poultry farming, pig breeding, and breeding of valuable fish species have noticeably intensified. Assessing the high degree of risk and high cost, investors do not go into long projects: there are few enthusiasts who will be engaged in cattle breeding. It is much more profitable to grow poultry: it grows faster, costs less, and is in great demand in the consumer market. So, the industry has a chance. And along with this, there are chances for people to find work in this area.

And agricultural enterprises are becoming more automated, so they need not only low-skilled workers. Technological engineers and veterinarians are in great demand. For the sale of agricultural products, specialists in commercial professions are required: sales managers, marketers, logisticians, economists, financiers. And in the personnel market there are more and more vacancies in this area. There is every reason to believe that in the next few years this industry will develop and create new jobs.

Network retail

Trade is the most flexible and rapidly recovering sector of the economy, because it is directly related to the satisfaction of basic human needs. It is always relevant, necessary in any economic and political situation, it works both in peacetime and in wartime. Trade is like grass: natural, simple, and tenacious. The first to emerge from under the snow of the next economic reforms, grows again after the lawnmower of new tax experiments. Changes formats: grocery stores, tents, markets, boutiques, supermarkets, but continues to fulfill its main function: to provide basic needs.

In the last five to seven years, the fastest growing sector in trade is. Of course, its development slowed during the crisis, but the trend still remained. Networks are actively absorbing other types of trade: markets, specialized and freestanding shops, convenience stores, stalls and kiosks are gradually disappearing. Following this trend, network retailers will continue their development in the next three to five years and will urgently need not only sellers, cashiers, employees of the hall, but also accountants, economists, specialists in procurement and foreign trade, logistics, operating engineers, middle managers and top management.

The crisis was a time of opportunity, they liked to recall this the previous time, when falling oil prices also caused a shock to the Russian budget system, and the global financial collapse played the role of current external sanctions. Today, everything is perceived more severely and they say little about opportunities - to survive. But still: who can benefit from the current situation, or at least survive a little better than others? About this, "Expert Onnline" asks experts.

"Defense" and agriculture

Denis Rassomakhin, Advisor to the Chairman of the Presidium of the Association of Young Entrepreneurs of Russia:

The defense industry has obvious advantages in times of crisis - at the end of 2015, Russia sold arms worth nearly $ 15 billion, and the total volume of orders reached a record level of $ 56 billion. Russia may soon push the United States out of a sole first place in arms trade.

Add to this the demand for weapons for the Russian army - and you get a sector that makes up a significant amount of the economy as a whole. The advantage of this sector of the Russian economy is the receipt of foreign exchange earnings, stable steady demand for products, a significant volume of orders, which allows us to plan production for years to come.

A difficult situation with agriculture. According to statistics, by the end of 2015, agriculture became one of the few growing sectors of the economy - by the end of 2015, it added more than 3% to the figures for the same period of 2014.

On the other hand, frankly speaking, the growth is insignificant - especially against the background of the amount of funds allocated: under the "State Program for the Development of Agriculture and the Regulation of Agricultural Products, Raw Materials and Food Markets for 2013–2020". In 2016, almost 237 billion rubles will be allocated for the development of agriculture, and in total, under this program, the agricultural sector should receive more than 2 trillion rubles for this period.

The high expectations of this capacious sector of the Russian economy are clear. Most likely, the first serious conclusions on this subject should be made in the medium term, however, the observed positive growth dynamics inspire optimism.

Retail - albeit weakly, banks - ambiguously, tourism in the Russian Federation

Roman Terekhin, expert at the Presidential Commissioner for the Protection of Entrepreneurs' Rights:

Now there is a positive trend in retail. For example, by the end of 2015, the revenue of Magnit increased by 24.3% compared to the previous year, to 947.8 billion rubles, Dixy Group of Companies - by 18.9% to 272.3 billion rubles. However, it is worth noting that although growth is observed, but these are its minimum values. Thus, the growth of Magnit’s indicators by 24.3% is even less than in the crisis year of 2009, when the economic downturn was sharp and significant.

Ambiguous situation with the banking sector. In 2016, the regulator continues to actively clean up the market from weak or unscrupulous players. In 2015, the Bank of Russia revoked licenses of 93 credit organizations.

One of the positive aspects is the reduction of corporate debt. If at the beginning of last year the banking sector owed the Bank of Russia about 9.5 trillion rubles, then at the beginning of 2016, the banks' debts to the regulator decreased to just 5.4 trillion rubles.

Nevertheless, the growth of the banking sector in 2016 seems more preferable to forecasting: the key to this will be, on the one hand, budget cuts, and, on the other, the tightening of the Bank of Russia anti-inflation policy.

Another industry that benefits from this situation is domestic tourism. As foreign trips are reduced, the demand for tours within Russia will definitely increase against this background. Thus, those companies that respond qualitatively to it have a chance to significantly expand their market share.

In addition, there are prospects for the agro-industrial complex due to the fact that the market is experiencing a shortage of some products that are subject to sanctions. For example, a promising area is the production of cheese.

2015 will go down in the history of the Russian economy as the beginning of a protracted economic crisis. For the first time since 1999, leading industries have shown a decline. According to official figures, industrial production in the outgoing year decreased by almost 4%. If we take into account the devaluation of the national currency at the beginning of this year, the real collapse of industrial production in Russia becomes even more dramatic.

The largest shock in 2015 was caused by such industries as engineering, light industry, mining, ferrous metallurgy, etc. Due to the double drop in hydrocarbon prices, leading oil and gas companies were forced to freeze investment projects for exploration and production of oil and gas in new deposits.

This year was not easy for trade either. According to official data from Rosstat, the volume of goods sold through the country's retail chains decreased by 11.7% compared with 2014. The largest losses in this regard were suffered by individual entrepreneurs and small businesses. The profitability of large retail chains has also seriously decreased.

Systemic problems that have been exposed this year, as well as the defense-oriented budget structure of 2016, leave no hope for a speedy resolution of economic problems. Obviously, the process of economic stagnation will drag on, and a number of industries will continue to show zero or negative growth. Despite the fact that the belts are tightened to the limit, in 2016 many businesses will have to punch new holes in their belts.

Despite the general bleak picture, in 2016 a number of promising sectors will appear that will grow, despite the reduction in the overall market. If you omit the enterprises of the military-industrial complex, which will receive a significant part of the tasty budget pie, a number of other industries will be in a privileged position.

It is obvious that the chemical industry will feel good next year. Chemical fertilizer producers will not feel the crisis. The demand for chemical industry products will grow, as is the likelihood that prices for potash and other fertilizers will rise in 2016.

Thanks to state support, Russia's agricultural sector will also grow. The greatest prospects await enterprises engaged in crop production and dairy farming. At the same time, the agro-industrial complex will be the driver of the development of agricultural machinery. By the way, thanks to a number of state programs, the flagships of agricultural machinery, such as Rostselmash and St. Petersburg Tractor Plant, will feel confident even in a crisis.

Good prospects remain for the pharmaceutical industry. Despite all the difficulties, in 2016 the Russians will not save on health.

On the other hand, according to experts, the period of depression will be accompanied by an increase in alcohol consumption. This fact makes investment in the budget segments of the alcohol industry promising.

The situation in the mining industry will be quite stable. There is reason to believe that prices for hydrocarbons, coal, ferrous and non-ferrous metals in 2015 reached their minimum values. Good prospects are waiting for woodworking. And even if quotes for some of the above positions fall in the coming year, the pace of decline will not be so significant.

Thus, despite all the difficulties that Russian industrialists will face in 2016, there are still quite promising sectors that will develop despite the crisis. How long the crisis itself will last will depend on the openness of the economy, the availability of loans for business entities, and, of course, oil prices.
