  • when making a purchase on an unfamiliar site or from an unfamiliar person, register the purchase with cash on delivery;
  • try to cooperate with trusted stores that have already established themselves as trusted sellers and not buy things on one-day websites;
  • making a prepayment (if it is impossible to refuse it for any reason), check the seller’s cleanliness by entering his card number in the search query. As a rule, information about scammers is on the relevant sites - blacklists.

Chargeback is a refund and cancellation procedure by an international payment system. Simply put, chargeback allows you to return money from a site or for a product of poor quality from an online store (for example, AliExpress).

Depending on the reason for the return, you need to specify a code in the application - your own code for each payment system. There are many, but I will list four main ones.

  • Reason # 1. The money was transferred to the seller’s account, but the goods were never sent (moreover, the seller cannot prove the opposite). In this case, specify code 30 (for Visa) and code 4855 (for MasterCard)
  • Reason number 2. The goods are received, but it is seriously different from the order (wrong type or there are malfunctions). This, unfortunately, may well happen when shopping in online stores. Code for this situation: 51 and 4853, respectively
  • Reason number 3. There was a double charge on the card. Codes: 82 for Visa and 4834 for MasterCard
  • Reason number 4. The cardholder did not pay at all with the card (if it was stolen or fraudulent). Codes: 81 and 4863, respectively

How does the refund on the card?

The chargeback procedure is initiated by the issuing bank that issued your bank card.

For clarity, we consider a specific situation. You ordered a smartphone in the Deshevle.net online store and paid for the purchase with a Sberbank card. Three weeks passed, the order somewhere “hung up”, the technical support of the site does not respond to requests. It's time to initiate the chargeback procedure in Sberbank.

You come to the department with a completed application and written evidence. The application can be submitted within 120 days from the moment of debiting the money from the card for MasterCard and 180 days for Visa. The maximum deadline for applying for a chargeback for both the one and the other payment system is 540 days. So with chargeback it is better not to delay!

Making a chargeback, a bank client disputes the transaction. Therefore, the application for a chargeback will have to attach a whole package of documents - the more the better. An agreement with the company, checks, receipts, card statements, printouts of electronic correspondence with the seller, photo and description of the goods, etc.

It is better to hand over the documents personally to the employee of the department, having duplicated the entire package in electronic form. Note! Of all the possible reasons for initiating a chargeback, it is most difficult to prove the fact that the product was not received by you or its characteristics do not correspond to those declared when paying. You will have to prove that you tried your best, but could not solve the issue with the online store directly.

What affects the result of the chargeback?

In one case, the application will be considered in a couple of weeks, in the other in three months. For some, the procedure will end with the return of the entire amount, and for someone, chargeback will be denied. But again, all from the very beginning. Reasoned and very detailed. Attach all payment documents to the letter. And indicate that the author violated this clause of the contract.
