Children's volunteer movement. Orphanage - what volunteers do

“In general, Olya and I had long conceived of something similar - we have long been talking about the fact that there are different facets of charity, you can relate to this in different ways, and help is different and all of it is needed.

And I myself remember my first trip to the orphanage a few years ago when I realized that everything I knew about it was not at all like that. I saw with my own eyes that these children generally do not need gifts as such. Moreover, there will always be those who give these gifts. It turned out to be much more important that, leaving the orphanage, these children have absolutely no experience in communicating with those who are “there”, who live in families, they have absolutely no experience in family life and, as a rule, the families they build in the future is experiencing great difficulties and crumbling. We conceived a project on an ongoing basis, in which we would engage the topic   social volunteering- when representatives of different companies, bloggers and ordinary people come together and do something important and necessary. Together.

Because now really many companies want to help and are ready to do it. But, unfortunately, they have no options besides “collecting gifts for the new year”. We met with the guys from Gazpromneft, quickly found a common language about what we were going to do, and we prepared this trip with them. The company funded supplies and provided transportation, "Matryoshka"  all organized.

Why did we go to Tikhvin? Everything is very simple. If you call any nearby orphanage, you will be answered something in the spirit: "come on the sixteenth at 15:30, you have an hour, because then there is a busy schedule." This means that these institutions are the turn of those who want to help. But if you are 100 kilometers away - there is already less enthusiasm. Fate itself sent us to the Municipal Institution "Social Rehabilitation Center for Juveniles" Firefly ", or simply a Tikhvin shelter.

This institution is "borderline" - that is, it is not an orphanage as such, but also not a pioneer camp. This includes children from dysfunctional families - someone comes in the afternoon (engages, does homework, talks to psychologists and goes back), someone lives permanently (from the family they take him out for rehabilitation, from difficult conditions, and work with them for a year , then about 80% come back, and the rest, unfortunately, go to orphanages).

And these children are not easy. The director, Tamara Alexandrovna, told us something that made her hair move - and all this happens to eleven-year-old girls and ten-year-old boys, simply because there is no one to help, support, direct, listen, advise. They don’t even understand what’s wrong with them, they perceive all the horrors that happen to them as a given.

It is not paradoxical, but such children need communication most of all. Communication with those who live "in the city", with girls and boys who have a profession and can teach something. Yes, just talk about this and that.

We quickly gathered a group of people who wanted to join: in addition to volunteers from Gazpromneft, we went with us Katya Gribanova(who, by the way, has a lot of experience in participating in charity projects, she is generally a man-heart) - the older guys made Christmas wreaths with her.
Katya Kovernik  from Gogol-Shop - the little girl with such pleasure painted toys and then hung them on the Christmas tree!

Vanya Tabakov  showed tricks - the boys were wildly delighted and took a few tricks from him note.

it was really fun!

Masha Gorelik  I brought all kinds of decorative beauty with us and together we made New Year's cards.

Do you know what is the most interesting? When you ask who the postcard is for, everyone answered: "for mom."

And our little ones entertained little children "Hares PR "  - they know a lot about how to cheer people up.

We went with us Masha Surikova , Olya Boyarkina , Sasha Alder  - Thank you guys so much.

On the second floor there was a "noisy room" - there were a lot of kids, screams, everything was rather chaotic and loud. And on the first, where the older children, there were such intimate conversations and calm. Somehow it happened that we absolutely naturally split into pairs of three and talked in our narrow circle.

I had a girl Tanya and a boy Andrei, with whom we immediately found a common language. And on the other hand, there were two more beauties Ira and Lisa - this is the category, I tell you ... I can’t even imagine how it all comes to them, because the body of the child (they are absolutely children, 11 and 13 years old) is already quite the unpleasant experience of an adult beaten by a person’s life, and this is such a strange mixture of arrogance and embarrassment, briskness and low self-esteem ... Everyone wanted to hug and not let go anywhere. But they have their parents, to whom they return and .. build relationships again.

We just talked about all kinds of nonsense - word for word, about different things, without any moralizing. We made it clear that we came "without slogans and banners." They were rather vividly interested in “how is it in St. Petersburg”, who does what, can such cards be sold, can florists and make-up artists really earn ... The boys scrambled, talked about their successes. Well, just ordinary children. Just a little disturbing and unkempt. That's all.

We calmly engaged, talked, talked, the hares did their fun business, then we handed each a personalized carrot from

Project of the Volunteer Movement “Impulse”

Urgency of the problem

At the heart of any volunteer movement is a principle as old as the world: if you want to feel like a man, help another. This principle is understandable and close to all those who know the sense of justice, who understand that it is only possible to make society better by the joint efforts of each of its members.

In all countries, the volunteer movement has deep distinctive roots. For example, in Russia, the history of the volunteer movement was initially associated with the activities of the Orthodox Church, later - with the initiative of the first non-profit public associations - Zemstvos, teachers and doctors, who did a lot for the Russian peasantry. In Russia, the first female volunteer movement arose - sisters of mercy, who voluntarily went to the front during the Russian-Turkish war to help wounded soldiers.

Why do people go to volunteers? Each has its own reasons, and few express a desire to speak frankly about them. Basically, this is a matter of conscience for each person, but in addition to moral satisfaction, which brings free help to one's neighbor, the movement of volunteers gives a number of advantages, especially to youth. This is new acquaintances, and the acquisition of new professional skills, knowledge, and even the opportunity to make a good career.

In our difficult times, elderly, seriously ill people, people with disabilities, orphans are especially affected. In order to help them, it is not necessary to register with a special organization; in our school, one of the areas of the Iskra children's association is the volunteer movement Impulse, where everyone can find out where they are most waiting for his help, where the hour of his stay is best strong medicine. But one should not allow volunteers to come and do whatever they like. They themselves, their abilities and their actual actions need careful guidance.

For the further development of the volunteer movement in our school, an art teacher, A. Verbitskaya, developed volunteer movement project "Impulse".

Rules of conduct for volunteers in an orphanage. They will be included in the manual “The ABC of Mercy”, which is published by the Synodal Department of the Diocese for Church Charity and Social Ministry. The textbook contains recommendations on how volunteers to behave with children who live without parents, how to communicate with them, which should not be given to them. "Russian Planet" asked to comment on the tips of the manual psychologists and educators.

No empty promises

In dealing with children who grow up without parents, the guide advises you to observe several fundamentally important rules. First of all, never talk about their moms and dads, especially if the parents are alive, but deprived of parental rights or lead an asocial lifestyle and never visit. This is a sore subject.

Of course, it is better to avoid such conversations altogether, but sometimes it does not work out, - says Elena Postysheva, a child psychologist and consultant in a conversation with a correspondent of the Republic of Poland. - If the child confided in you, and he himself began to talk about the family, then do not interrupt, let speak out. Listen carefully, without interrupting and not commenting in any way. Even if the little interlocutor himself condemns mom or dad, you do not need to support him in this. Parents are still the closest people to him, whatever they may be. Comments here are inappropriate, because they can deeply traumatize the psyche of the child, because in his heart of hearts, in any case, he believes that they are good. Doubts, but believes.

If the mother and father of the orphanage are alive, then under no circumstances should you call him an orphan - for him this will sound like an insult.

Absolutely justified advice, - Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences Irina Veligzhanina assures the correspondent of the Republic of Poland. - Before the orphanage, these children often dealt with people who did not keep promises. Dad promised not to drink them, mom - not to disappear for several days, social workers vowed that they would not separate them from his brother or sister. And if you promise to come next Sunday, but don’t do it, then tear up the old wound. It will seem to you: there is nothing wrong with the fact that you showed up seven days later, and the child will suffer all this time. He will feel betrayed again. Therefore, the less promises you make, the better.

Honest No

It'll be hard. The authors of the manual remind: children in orphanages know how to make promises. They yearn for affection, and are ready to hug any stranger. Many, barely seeing a new person, ask: "Take me to you." And the volunteer should be able to answer a firm "No."

It is much easier for a child to come to terms with refusal than to believe empty words and be disappointed if he was again deceived, - warns Irina Veligzhanina. - The main thing is honesty. For example, a child’s request to take him to him needs to be kindly, but firmly answered: “No, unfortunately, I can’t do it.”

And if the volunteer is sure that he can really visit this particular child regularly, then he can continue: “But I’ll try to become your friend.” When there is no such certainty, then say this: “I would like to come more often and try to do it. But my work and family take a lot of time. Therefore, I cannot promise that I will come again. ” Children in orphanages have experienced a lot, psychologically they are older than their peers from wealthy families, and are quite capable of understanding and accepting such an explanation.

For the pupils of the orphanage, the opportunity to communicate not with teachers or other employees of the institution, but with strangers with whom they are not connected by status relations, is important, Elena Postysheva. A heart-to-heart conversation for many of them is more valuable than any gifts.

We read and watch movies together

The authors of the textbook advise conducting master classes with the guys, conducting circles, teaching new things, and bringing a good book or movie discs. But not just give, but read the book with the guys, discuss the conflicts that the characters fall into, their choice in difficult situations. The same thing with movies: it is best to watch a movie together, observe what moments cause them the greatest emotional response, and talk about them.

Discussing the behavior of movie and book heroes is a good reason to raise serious topics in conversation, talking about which in a different situation they will be bored with, - explains this advice Elena Postysheva. - For a second, imagine what you were offered: “Now let's talk about moral choice.” What will be your reaction? And if you are asked: “Why do you think that in the series“ Voronin ”Kostya and Vera will not sell an apartment and buy another one, away from their parents?”, Then you will willingly offer your explanation, and after that a heated debate will begin. It works the same with children.

According to Elena Postysheva, books and films whose plot is based on everyday everyday situations are an ideal choice for an orphanage. After all, children there are least familiar with the life of an ordinary family. And any adventure or science fiction films cause them less emotional response than what seems to an adult familiar.

As the authors of the manual note, joint reading of books, watching films, listening to music, opens up another opportunity: to show new things, to form a taste. Only with adults can schoolchildren join high genres, for example, classical music or opera.

Teach New - Best Gift

Practical knowledge that is useful to them in adulthood is valuable for children. Do you own hairdressing? Share your skills, buy the necessary equipment so that girls can do hairstyles to each other. Know how to make repairs? Do not buy tiles or wallpapers for the orphanage, but change the rooms with the guys.

- Pupils of orphanages often face problems in their independent lives that never arise in children who grew up in an ordinary family, - a social educator Daria Cherepanova explains to the correspondent of the Republic of Poland. - If a “family” child already at the age of 7–8 knows which food to keep in the refrigerator and which one in the closet, or how to heat dinner in the microwave, then for children from the orphanage this is all a mystery. Many of them have never seen how to peel potatoes, or fry eggs, because they see dishes from them already ready, in the dining room. After graduation, the lack of basic household skills is the cause of great stress. Therefore, it is important to show them in advance how to behave in certain situations.

According to the authors of the manual, the main task of volunteers is to communicate with children, and not material assistance to an orphanage or boarding school. Unfortunately, they often refer to any volunteer solely as a potential source of material benefit, they expect gifts from him. And if he brings these gifts at each visit, he only maintains and strengthens the consumer position both among adult employees of childcare facilities and among children. Therefore, the primary task of any volunteer is to give the child the knowledge that is useful to him, to help form the right value system.
