How to organize a hotel for animals. How to open a hotel for animals: a detailed business plan. Purchase of the necessary equipment

* Calculations use average data for Russia

Enough a large number of people have their pets, which they take care of and give them a lot of attention. However, there are situations when the owners are forced to leave and therefore do not have the opportunity to care for their pet. This can happen for absolutely any reason: a business trip, a long-awaited vacation, an illness requiring inpatient treatment, a trip to relatives, and the like. In this case, the animal must be constantly supervised and receive appropriate care. In this case, the owners sometimes turn to neighbors or close relatives, but this is not always possible. In this regard, it may be relevant to open your own hotel for animals. This type of business appeared relatively recently in this country, but the number of players is constantly growing, which indicates good prospects and great opportunities for such an undertaking.

Not all even relatively large cities can find hotel services for animals today. At the same time, quite often such a hotel business is combined with an animal shelter and a veterinary clinic, which allows the owners to offer a wider range of services by placing their entire business on one site. A novice entrepreneur must assess the situation in the market in order to know about the offers of competitors and their weak and strengths, this will allow you to offer potential customers something new, and in this direction there are many opportunities for additional services. Thus, the level of competition in most cases cannot be called critical, and the players already operating on the market can easily lose their positions only if they do not offer their customers the services of a really large hotel.

However, some competition for entrepreneurs who decide to open a full-fledged business based on animal shelter for a while can be made up of individuals who are ready to take care of someone else's animal for a much lower fee, guaranteeing the abandoned pet virtually the same conditions that he had at home. The main disadvantage of private individuals is the conclusion of an informal contract, which means, from a legal point of view, a complete avoidance of responsibility in the event of illness or even death of an animal left in care. Individuals in rare cases can also provide veterinary care, provide proper nutrition; moreover, not always such a person can find the right approach to the animal, which is always possible only for a professional cynologist. However, such individuals who have been engaged in overexposure for a long time (this is the name of the temporary care of someone else's animal, while this term is used by both professionals and amateurs themselves) can open their own hotel, because they already have some reputation and a certain client base, which will allow it is much faster for them to start a business and develop it. In this case, it is the professional approach and the conclusion of official contracts that will become a competitive advantage, which, of course, entails full responsibility for the entrusted animal, but allows you to attract more and more consumers.

To get started, you need to register as a subject entrepreneurial activity. It's easiest to apply as individual entrepreneur, because it does not require large financial costs, it will take a little time and effort. If there is a need for registration legal entity, then the preferred form is a society with limited liability, because in this case, as in the case of individual entrepreneurship, a simplified taxation system will be available that allows transferring no more than 6 percent of income or 15 percent of operating profit to the state. The situation is somewhat more complicated if a veterinary clinic is opened on the basis of the hotel, because in this case it will be necessary to obtain many permits and comply with certain working conditions, including placing your shelter at a certain distance from residential buildings. Despite the fact that most pet hotels are located on the outskirts or even outside of cities, this can sometimes be inconvenient. More detailed information about the opening of a veterinary clinic is provided in the relevant article. To open only the hotel itself, it is not required to obtain any special permits and licenses, in connection with which most entrepreneurs provide their clients with outsourcing veterinary services. The activity itself falls under the definition of (OKPD 2) 75.0 Veterinary services and (OKPD 2) 96.09 Other personal services, not included in other groups.

An important point in organizing your business is finding a territory for accommodating a hotel. As already noted, often pet hotels are located on the outskirts of the city, where there is fresh air and a lot of open space for walking animals.

Another factor that determines the placement of a hotel away from residential buildings include banal sanitary and environmental requirements. Just keep in mind that the site must be really large, because the work will require the presence of several rooms, an area with aviaries and a walking area. Often, one animal hotel occupies a plot of several hectares, although several ares of land can be accommodated if you do not plan to take care of a large number of animals. The size of the plot is ultimately determined by the entrepreneur himself, depending on his requirements and the planned amount of work, as well as on the presence or absence of additional services, because the shelter and the veterinary clinic require their own buildings and surrounding area.

If there are opportunities and financial resources, then it is better to buy the territory into ownership, while its location does not imply such a high price, as, for example, in the central districts of the city. It is optimal to find an abandoned territory of any kindergarten or camps, because such organizations are initially built with the expectation of a site of considerable size and the construction of several buildings with their subsequent arrangement.

Thus, you can get a good territory with an established infrastructure, and you will only have to invest in the repair of premises and buildings. If there is no opportunity to buy such real estate, then you can consider options for renting premises and territory, but in this case you will have to include a fairly large amount of funds in your monthly expenses.

If suitable real estate is not available, then it is necessary to find a good site, large in size, and carry out the construction of the necessary buildings. The administrative block is minimally required, in which all organizational issues are resolved, there is a warehouse and a kitchen, as well as premises for placing small animals (primarily rodents), birds and reptiles. In addition, buildings are being built to organize their own animal shelter and veterinary clinic, if this is provided for by the business plan. The cost of building the necessary buildings will cost several million rubles, as well as the purchase of an already finished territory with infrastructure will also cost a lot.

The next stage of planning is the equipment of your territory and premises. Here you will also have to invest a lot of money; however, the amount may vary depending on the chosen format of work. The simplest hotel is one that accepts only cats and dogs (or only cats or only dogs) for overexposure, while not having the capacity to accommodate a large number of animals. In this case, it is necessary to equip insulated enclosures on the street and cages indoors, while often, if there are few animals, small ones are allowed into the premises without being kept in a corral. However, often hotels are still focused on a fairly large number of pets at the same time, while accepting for a while not only the main partner animals, but also all the rest. These are rodents: mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs; birds, reptiles and even arachnids. Each of these types of animals needs its own conditions of maintenance and care, and there must be a specialist who monitors them and provides them with everything they need.

Of course, the most difficult thing is to allocate and equip places for cats and dogs (the probability that someone will drag another animal that is difficult in its content, for example, a crocodile or some hippopotamus, is critically small), all other small animals are placed in special racks cell by cell. The main thing here is to monitor the condition of the animal and give it food at a certain time, reptiles generally lie quietly all day long, they would only feed, arachnids feel great even within the terrarium, the main thing is to make sure that the huge spider does not crawl out, because then there is not only the risk of being crushed, but also that a couple of people will faint.

With all small animals, there are much fewer problems, but they are also not brought to the hotel so often, but it is still necessary to have a place for them. To do this, you will have to allocate a rather large room; one rack for about 20 small animals is half a meter wide, two meters long and two and a half meters high, more passages are needed between them, and their proper location is important. The cost can vary greatly depending on the characteristics (additional lighting, climate control, heating, automatic feeders), but one rack is unlikely to cost more than 100 thousand rubles.

Further, enclosures are equipped, and they differ not only in size, but also in internal equipment. It is advisable to immediately order the installation of heating devices, because otherwise it will not be possible to keep animals there in winter. The cost of one enclosure for a small dog is 25-40 thousand rubles, but for large animals, more expensive devices are needed. They cost about 60 thousand rubles. In general, you can find cheaper enclosures, and many hotels offer their customers even different levels of service and comfort for animals. If you want your pet to live in royal apartments, pay extra money. If you buy enclosures and order their installation in bulk, it will come out somewhat cheaper in terms of a unit of production. Cats can be kept in relatively small cages, giving the animal a relatively large amount of space and everything it needs to live.

In some very advanced clinics, video surveillance systems are even installed in each cage and aviary so that the owner can monitor his pet in real time. Installing such a system is an additional expense and maintenance cost, but customers appreciate it very much and are willing to shell out extra money.

In addition, you need to rely on the equipment of the shelter and the veterinary clinic (if it was decided to build them, of course), while the shelter is equipped approximately according to the same principle as the hotel, only the level of comfort here is an order of magnitude lower, but the veterinary clinic is very complicated. undertaking. It will be very useful at a hotel and a shelter, but not all entrepreneurs can afford this line of business. More details - again in the corresponding article.

Ready-made ideas for your business

An important issue is the selection of personnel. The first are administrative and service personnel, and the entrepreneur will become their direct boss, only if he is not a veterinarian, for example. There will be few people here, but the exact number of employees is calculated depending on the size of the hotel. You can not do without the help of a veterinarian, who, ideally, should be constantly on the territory or at least be able to arrive immediately at the first request. Some hire graduate students who are studying veterinary science so that the newcomer gains experience (and requires less wages). The veterinarian examines incoming animals, examines the guests, conducts treatment, if necessary, including preventive. His services are initially included in the cost of overexposure services. If there is a veterinary clinic, all the necessary personnel are hired, from the head veterinarian to cleaners and assistants.

By the way, it is worth noting that most hotels do not accept animals without a veterinary book or at least a health certificate. If a sick animal gets into the hotel, the infection can spread to other animals and even people - I don’t think it’s worth talking about the consequences. This is at best a loss of some amount of money, and often reputation. Therefore, an incoming animal is examined at a veterinary clinic on the territory, if there is a clinic and if the owner did not take care of it in advance.

Next, you need to make sure that people who specialize in animals work at the facility. These are, first of all, cynologists who can interact with other animals and calm them down. They are hired to help people who walk dogs, monitor free-roaming animals, ensure order, monitor the condition of food and enclosures. Next staff units- kitchen staff who prepare food. At the same time, the owner is offered a choice - to buy food on his own and leave it, or pay for kitchen services.

The hotel, as one could understand, offers a sufficient number of services. In addition to the accommodation itself, this is food, games and walking, even training, additional mating services are also offered (which has nothing to do with the hotel at all), veterinary services. The shelter can hardly be called a commercial activity; it is usually opened as a charity, accepting and giving away animals for free. In this type of business, such charity looks very organic. The cost of overexposure depends mainly on the size of the animal, as well as on the conditions of its maintenance. The most difficult thing, perhaps, is with dogs, because they need walking, dogs can grapple with each other, sometimes even attack a person, they are always the most difficult. It is easier to take cats for overexposure, they can only pose a serious danger to each other or to small animals such as birds and rodents, but they are usually kept in closed cages. In general, in a hotel, contacts of animals with each other are usually excluded as much as possible, but, for example, dog walking is rarely carried out individually, usually several animals go for a walk. Only an experienced dog handler can cope with this, because the dogs have crossed paths with each other before, and their reaction is difficult to predict.

A small dog is accepted into a hotel for 300-500 rubles per day, the cost of a day for large breeds can reach up to 1000 rubles. Overexposure of a cat is slightly cheaper or the same as for a small dog. Rodents, reptiles and other spiders are taken for even less money, only if it is not a dangerous animal, although who keeps them at home ... All additional services are discussed with the client additionally, and it is advisable to immediately inform the person by phone about the conditions of settlement and residence.

Such a business can work in different formats. In this article, a fairly large hotel with a shelter and a veterinary clinic, designed for a large number and at the same time a wide variety of animals, was described to a greater extent. At the same time, many companies work in a different format, having no more than 10 places for animals at their disposal, and they take only dogs. You can start a business with this in order to know in which direction it is better to move later.

In modern times, such activities are thoroughly strengthened in the number of projects that are considered profitable. The growing demand for zoo hotel services every year is associated with an increase in the number of pets and the growing pace of life of their owners. The purpose of such projects is to make a profit by satisfying the needs of customers through the provision of overexposure of pets and care for them.

Business Relevance

Statistics show that every third family has one or more pets in need of overexposure, not only during the owners' vacation, but also in the event of a business trip, repair work or illness. Despite the fact that the service for the temporary keeping of pets in individual apartments is still in demand, the service of professional hotels with specially trained employees is rapidly gaining popularity. Owners have increased requirements for the quality of care for their pets, including cleanliness, correct mode feeding, the ability to quickly provide first aid in case of need, and even continuous video surveillance.

In order for this project to pay off and be able to make a profit, you must first determine how relevant it is, familiarize yourself with its features, analyze the likely risks in such activities, and make an assessment of financial investments.

The target audience

  1. Pet owners who periodically leave home for one reason or another and live alone.
  2. Families with pets, leaving to rest in full force.
  3. People who do not have the opportunity to fully care for pets for a certain time due to lack of time or physical abilities.

  • security organization;
  • creation of comfortable conditions;
  • pet care (combing, bathing, cleaning the nose, ears and eyes);
  • animal control and provision medical care if necessary;
  • provision of food and drinking water;
  • walking;
  • systematic putting in order of the places of residence of pets, followed by disinfection.

In such hotels, each animal will be able to receive food that is fully proportionate to its weight, physical condition and age. In addition, the food will contain the required amount of vitamins and healthy ingredients.

Each pet is provided with a high-quality heated room, equipped with a ventilation system, with a bed and a bowl. To attract a client, the “number” for a pet is often supplemented with familiar and favorite items in the form of rugs, toys, etc.

To generate more revenue, you can expand the list of services by adding training, selling accessories, additional treats, playing with animals and delivering them to owners.

Each of the employees must love animals, not be indifferent to them and conscientiously fulfill their duties. To improve the skills of the staff, they are periodically sent to appropriate courses with subsequent examinations.

Costs and payback

Experts recommend contacting construction organizations, but if you have the appropriate skills, then you can build a structure yourself.

This will help save money. Care should be taken to create comfortable conditions for animals - division into zones, for example, for dogs and cats. This is necessary so as not to create a nervous situation, the hotel should not cause stress to pets.

The remaining $10,000 will go to:

  1. Production of enclosures for animals, size 1,500×2000 mm. For small pets (cats or parrots), compact cages are suitable. All living spaces must be comfortable.
  2. Grooming equipment: toilets, feeding bowls, leashes, combs, although in most cases the owners bring their own to make the animal feel comfortable.

  6. Furniture: cabinets for storing food and other equipment, chairs.

It will be important to form tariff plan. To create maximum favorable conditions, it is necessary to study the market (monitor the pricing policy of competitors), and take into account the cost of feed and other consumables. On average, a hotel for animals costs from 300 to 500 rubles per day. In this case, the business will pay off in 2-3 years, subject to a 50 percent workload.

    Professional business plans

Margarita Nikitina shared the story of creating a network of pet hotels, in which all processes are automated, and told what options for overexposure of pets exist on the market, highlighting their main advantages and disadvantages.

Cat business: how I managed to create an automated pet hotel with affordable prices

    Margarita Nikitina

Why I decided to open a hotel for animals

I had the idea to open a zoo hotel according to European standards a long time ago, when I was studying at the veterinary faculty. During practice in various veterinary clinics, I saw the conditions in which animals are kept after operations. How cramped they are in small cages, how they want to move and jump. Pet owners had to call administrators for several hours to get at least some information about the condition of their pet.

What to say about the service? No contracts, obligations or the slightest bit. Going on vacation when you have a cat or a dog was no easy task. Whom to ask to sit with a pet, who can be entrusted with the keys to the apartment?

To give your cat to acquaintances or friends, and there was no question, because they tear up wallpaper, furniture, after such overexposure, friends cease to be friends.

It was a distant 2007, when I realized that the market needed changes. But as a veterinary student, I had neither the means nor the experience. Over the course of 10 years, I gained experience, grew to a position in a large company. And in 2017, a turning point came when I decided to start realizing my old dream.

    I started a business without anyone's help

I decided to open a business on my own, without anyone's help and partnership, I had enough experience, I accumulated funds. And in the spring of 2017, she began to implement her project. When you start any business, first of all, you need to analyze the market, see how competitors work. What is the demand and for what services.

I was very lucky: the market has not changed much in these 10 years. There were hotels for animals, but the level of service remained at the same level. Many hotel owners, wanting to save their money, equipped them from improvised materials (plywood, plastic). So I made the decision that the animal rooms in my hotels would be all glass.

In my opinion, competitors on the market also paid minimal attention to cleaning and disinfection, limiting themselves to simple sweeping and cleaning trays. I have compiled a list of business processes that are fundamentally changing the approach to cleaning and disinfection.

    In the zoo hotel

The next step is the choice of premises. This is a separate, significant business process. Here I encountered landlords for whom the service I provided was new. They did not perceive the zoo hotel as a modern and full-fledged service to the population. For them, a pet hotel meant filth, noise, and bad smell in the first place.

We opened our first hotel in June 2017. To convince the landlord, I had to show photographs of European and American hotels, tell on my fingers about the ventilation, disinfection and cleaning systems. Today we already have 10 hotels across the country and, opening each new hotel, there are less and less problems with landlords.

How I searched for staff in a hotel

When I approached the issue of recruiting staff for my hotel, I clearly understood that these should be employees with higher veterinary education. Working with animals involves not only feeding and playing with them, but also a qualitative examination before being accepted for overexposure. The staff needs to understand what to do if the animal suddenly becomes ill. A simple "cat nanny" will not cope with these tasks.

I posted an ad on popular HR resources. There were many responses, but not every employee was ready to clean the premises and wash the floors. As a result, I picked up a few people, and they still work in the company. One of the first employees has already been promoted and is the administrator of the entire BookingCat hotel chain.

    Work only with professionals

One of the tasks was the maximum automation of the hotel work process. This required serious "intervention". I planned that I would have a large network in different regions of Russia. I started with the site, but not everything went smoothly. To develop it, I turned to a familiar programmer. He took quite a lot of money (about 300 thousand rubles) and treated the work carelessly. When we began to actively expand, I had to hire really professional programmers and completely redo the site. And my "friend" is now out of touch.

My advice to you, be sure to work under the contract: later there will be much less problems if you need to defend your rights.

Now everything is set up and works great. The booking service is fully automated. We have integrated the latest advanced technologies of the IT market, several multi-channel telephones, a single all-Russian number 8-800. In my opinion, we have one of the best CRM systems, we do not miss a single client.

Where did I come after a year of work

When the main work was completed, the contractors installed all the equipment and video surveillance was set up, I opened the doors to my hotel. Thanks to an aggressive advertising campaign on the Internet, we received the first guests the next day after opening.

After 2 days, 5 more cats came to us. July we closed with over 80% hotel occupancy. We had 50 rooms, so this is a good indicator from a financial point of view. Provided that the average check per season is more than 10 thousand rubles, the monthly revenue was more than 1,200,000 rubles.

A year has passed, and the hotel has long recouped its investment. Now we have developed a permanent loyal customer base. And there are no days when the hotel is empty, even in the low season we have 10 or more cats. I accepted the right decision leaving a comfortable office and high position devoting time to yourself and your development. As well as my partners who are actively opening their hotels in different cities of Russia.

    In the zoo hotel

In the regions, we open hotels with a smaller number of rooms, on average from 15 to 30. Revenue there is much more modest, from 300 to 600 thousand rubles, but due to low maintenance costs, the business is quite effective and attractive. We now have 10 hotels, by the end of the year I plan to open 20 more in all million-plus cities.

I have developed an effective business model for building a network. My initial costs of creating a website and writing business processes have already paid off, and thanks to the royalties paid by partners, we can conduct effective and aggressive marketing. We invest more than 100 thousand rubles only in direct advertising to attract new pets to our hotels. In addition to overexposure advertising, we are also actively developing a franchise network, and, of course, considerable investments are also required here.

About 80% of purebred cats are brought to our hotels, the average cost of which is about a thousand dollars, but at the same time, the service is affordable for most citizens, and there are domestic mongrel cats among our guests. Indeed, regardless of the breed, cats are primarily family members, and the choice of a hotel for them is comparable to the choice of a kindergarten for a child.

What's going on in the market?

Many pet owners face the problem of temporary keeping pets one to several times a year. The reason to leave the "tailed" may be vacation, business trip, repair, relocation, visit of relatives, illness of the second pet or owner. According to a survey of pet owners, 1/3 are afraid to trust anyone with their "fluffies" and are even ready to refuse a trip. This is a real problem for some and a reason to refuse to have a pet at all.

What options for overexposure does the zooservice market offer in Russia?

    First option

The first and most common way to temporarily keep a pet is to leave it with friends or ask friends to come home to take care of a pet. It has its pros, cons and pitfalls that the owners do not think about. If the animal stays at home alone, then on the one hand, it experiences less stress, since its habitat has not changed, on the other hand, it is very bored in solitude and can be offended.

From resentment, pets begin to "revenge" and spoil walls and furniture. Acquaintances, as a rule, cannot always come daily, more often every other day or every few days. A pet often lacks food and water, not to mention attention, and with a dog this option is completely unacceptable.

I know about cases when our clients left their pets with friends, and animals, in protest, spoiled their wallpaper, furniture, showed aggression towards people and children, as a result, friendly relations were under threat.

As a rule, a strange animal becomes a burden for relatives and friends, even for a short period. I can give another example as an example: a guy asked a friend to come feed his cat, in the end he did it on the first and last day before his arrival, which he accidentally learned from mutual friends. After this incident, the cat needed a visit to the veterinarian.

    Second option

This is a paid home stay. There are people who place advertisements for overexposure at home on various Internet resources. The cost of such a service is comparable to the cost of living in a pet hotel. Consider the pros and cons of such a stay.

    • Firstly, you can hardly find real reviews about this person on the Internet. Does he really love animals and will follow all recommendations for care and maintenance?
    • Secondly, he most likely will not sign any liability agreement for keeping a pet, therefore, the person will not owe you anything in case of force majeure. There will be no liability between you.
    • Thirdly, there is no way you can be sure how your pet is treated and cared for. AT similar cases usually video surveillance is not provided.
    • Fourthly, you cannot be sure that during this period people will not take other pets for home overexposure, and they will get along with each other.
    • The fifth aspect you should consider is disinfection. No apartment can be 100% disinfected after your and other animals. If people accept pets for overexposure, then you are not the only guests, not the first and not the last. There is also no guarantee that the animal will not accidentally run out into open door or jump out the window. We are aware of such cases.

All these risks must be taken into account in private home overexposure. But there are undoubtedly pluses: a large space, if the pet is not closed in a separate room, proximity to your home, the cost is 10-20% lower than that of officially registered organizations.

If you decide to use private services, then it is better to choose a trusted person who will not have his own pets, or there is the possibility of their isolated keeping. The average cost of private overexposure in apartments is as follows: a cat from 400 rubles per day, a dog from 500 rubles per day, rodents from 200 rubles.

    Third option

These are zoo hotels. There are a lot of offers on the market now for all types of pets: these are open-air cages, and closed cages with heated floors, cages, wooden rooms, glass rooms, structures made of plastic / sandwich panels and other various materials.

How to approach the choice of a hotel and get a quality service?

    • First, make a guest visit to the hotel and look at the real conditions of keeping other pets. If you are denied this, this should alert you, it is better to choose another place to stay for your pet.
    • Secondly, you can check the hotel by simply calling on the phone and specifying whether the hotel will accept a guest with an infectious disease. If you are answered positively, then we recommend not to stop at this accommodation option.
    • Thirdly, look for real reviews about the institution on the Internet or social networks, contact people who used their service.
    • Fourth, ask for a contract. If you are not given it, then this should also be thought-provoking.

Now some hotels provide a video surveillance service, this is a definite plus and suggests that the hotel has nothing to hide, it complies with all standards. For the owner's peace of mind, we recommend using this option. Hotels that do not show animal welfare will not install CCTV for obvious reasons.

Another point is the disinfection and cleaning. It is definitely worth clarifying how this is done; during a guest visit, it is better to make sure for yourself that cleaning products are really available, and that the staff knows how to use them. If these simple questions are not being answered, then perhaps they are simply not disinfecting properly.

    In the zoo hotel

The health of the pet is also important. The hotel should ask you for a pet's veterinary passport with vaccination marks and inspect the animal before checking in.

What are the advantages of zoo hotels?

    • Official responsibility under the contract of temporary keeping of a pet.
    • Compliance with veterinary and sanitary rules and disinfection with professional detergents. The content of fluffies is paid much more attention than private overexposure.
    • Most often, more professional personnel with qualifications or education work.
    • Convenient locations, it is possible to make a guest visit before settling in and look at the actual conditions of detention.
    • Some pet hotels offer the function of video surveillance of your pet in every room 24/7 from the owner's smartphone. This is the safest and most reliable option for overexposure, you can always control what is happening and be sure of its safety.
    • Comfortable conditions of stay, care, attention, games, care. It is possible to use additional grooming or training options, which is very convenient.
    • A transfer or zootaxi makes it easier for the owner to have delivery problems.
    • Various payment options, including bank transfer or online payment.
    • Possibility of guest visit and search real reviews on the Internet about the organization.

    Fourth option

There is another accommodation option - a hospital at a veterinary clinic. Pros - professional staff, compliance with the rules of disinfection, convenient location.

Cons - pets are usually placed in cages and do not receive enough attention, games, care. It is more expedient to leave pets there after surgery, in case of other diseases for a short period. Animals that do not require special care are best placed in zoo hotels. The cost of such accommodation is usually about 600 rubles.
